TV Guide: A Play Festival - Staged Reading of Episodes 2

TV Guide: A Play Festival is a 3 day episodic experiment where we take three plays and turn them into series for the stage. From there each series will be presented as three "episodes" (or 1 Acts) for a total of 7 episodes with the episode 3 finale  being the ultimate crossover event . These stories all take place in the same universe but stretch over different times and locations with the goal being they all meet at the Finale (last day of the Festival).

We are creating stories by Black Femmes for the future of us. Centering the narratives of legacy, release, and magical connection with a global majority cast, opens up opportunities for more global majority creatives to engage in a working world made for them. It opens an opportunity to grapple with change and doom over a period of time with a community.

This event is a Staged Reading for  Episodes 2 of our festival. Directed by Ang Bey with dramaturgy from Dezi Tibbs, this reading is the follow up to the virtual reading of Episodes 1 (available for viewing on YouTube).  We will also be featuring an OMG! Pop-Up Store featuring the Book of Black Joy, games, puzzles, stickers, artwork, and more! Be sure to arrive early to shop before the Reading. The OMG! Pop-Up Store will open at approx. 6:20 PM.

About the Series

Months following Tender’s father’s disappearance, Tender receives a coded letter from him. Sparked by the new clue they set out on a journey to where he might be with the drive to disprove those claiming their father is dead. With hope of reunion and life on the line, Tender will do whatever it takes to see their father again. Aided by the sudden allies of a jester looking for her bird, a dancer searching for his twin, and a newly human with the past of a snake, the quad pushes forth towards their respective goals. But what they all will soon learn is that their missions are not the only ones in play...

Episode 2: Sea, Swallow Me

Tender and allies seek the map to Won’s manor. 

Per Mythic’s riddle, Tender, Jess, Residence, and Dancer go through the underground caverns and look for the map to Won’s manor that is hidden there. After finding and figuring the map the quad must trek through a fierce snowstorm in the Northern Mountains at night. Inside Won’s manor, Mythic is being held captive with a strange set of crystal balls and chains. With Won set to enter the room at any moment, the chances for Mythic to escape are looking slim. Tender and the others hustle to survive their cold climb, Mythic must survive an interaction with a weighty past.

Deep in the forest you can hear the pulses of life, revenge, and Iconic hoopla. Gangs of Bad Bitches use their looks and moves to fight for their survival in these trying times. But, when new faces stumble into the mix, the powers and plans to fulfill the Elite prophecy are shaken. Who will be the baddest bitch of all, and will it matter when the world ends? Episode 2: Fuck It

When Sade doesn’t get what she wants, she begs. And then she takes what she wants. 

After losing her girl and her confidence, Sade, the Suga Pop Queen, plots to put herself back on top. Cam introduces Sade to some new powers that she uses to bombard the doorstep of her ex. Giving the performance of her life, will it be enough to win back Zaddy’s heart? Either way, Sade will always take what she wants and make the best out of.

Emeraldlin by La’Needra “Lulu” Cornelious

About the Series

Emeraldlin is the city of gold and wealth and camera’s watching your every step. To get into this elite town, you have to be the best or be close to it, so why are Erica and Andre Wright on their watchlist? A marginal scientist and his ascending writer wife move to this city to help create protection for the asteroid that’s calculated to hit in three years. While Andre’s working to get these products off the ground, Erica stumbles upon the town's mysteries and she has to expose them, right? The series follows the Wrights as they try to navigate this new city and the interesting inhabitants in it.

Episode 2: A Seat at the Table

The city of gold, blood, & jewels has come crashing down, but Erica can save it...right?

After exposing The Elite’s plan to destroy Emeraldlin with the citizens still in it, Erica’s social status in the city has plummeted while her social media status has reached new levels making her a C-list celebrity. Erica now realizes the trouble that comes with her newfound fame as she finds herself as the new leader of Emeraldlin whether she likes it or not.
